Keith, my direct experience comparing both the CDT2 and CDT2/II (which I own) to my $50 dvd player, a modified Lambda transport, a Rega Planet cdp (I owned), a Nova Physics Memory Player (hard drive, so this is a whole different story!), and a buch of others--all confirms that transports make a large difference.
As large as the dac? In the comparos I did, no. But! But, the transport made a difference that was far more than noticeable, and could easily make the dac it was paired to sound either dark or extended. There were various other sonic changes with the transport, but these are two of the more obvious changes.
Here's the thing--if I just listen with my $50 dvd as transport and don't think about how it compares, it sounds just fine. Only when I put in a better transport do I notice *quickly!* what is missing with the dvd player. One caveat--my dvd player is nearly 3 years old, so the newer ones may perform better; I don't know.
Hope this is helpful...one thing this could lead you to is an upgrade path: get the dvd now and plan on an Audio Note transport later.
