They aren't marginal. They're very good, they just aren't all they can be.I won't say if it's a 10% improvement or a 30% or a 50% improvement, it depends on the mod.
But they are easy to improve. That isn't necessarily true for most speakers. A bone-stock Maggie can be easily, or not so easily, be transformed by judicious application into a truly world beating speaker.
Even the MMG can be made to rise above itself. There's nothing wrong with the basic technology of the planar magnetic panel.
It's fine. In fact it's a great design. The issue is that the way it's packaged is not optimal. There is room for improvement.
For whatever reason, Magnepan chooses not to change the build layout.
But that's OK. All of the issues with the stock unit can and have been addressed. That doesn't mean it isn't acceptable out of the box. It is. It's a fantastic speaker at the price. But it can be improved, easily.
I don't have a problem with that.
