I've got a pair of SMGa's that I've done the following that can be done to your MG1.6's.

1. Upgraded the crossover with better components
2. Built hardwood frames
3. Magnet wire
4. Full and Half Razor
5. Spiked base to adjust tilt back
6. Removed binding posts on XO box and direct connect to amps

All tweaks or mods made significant improvements for me. I'm currently modifying a pair of MG2.5's and incorporating all the mods listed above.

I would upgrade your XO first. You will have to build or buy external boxes. I'd recommend to used magnet wire for your internal wire as well as speaker wire. Save yourself $40.00 and don't use binding posts. Simply hard wire directly from the XO box to your amp. It sounds much better this way.

Before building frames, do the full razor. If you build a jigg to cut your VMAX, you can get it done in half a day.

The hardward frames do make a significant improvement but is the most labor intensive and expensive tweak. You will end up doing them all eventually.
