I'm using 1-1/4" round oak dowels as struts, and have enough left over to use as the legs for the small platform. So I would use a hole saw to drill a 1-1/2" inside diameter or larger hole for each leg.Figured I would pick up a pack of those toe spikes from PE (I'm using the "super" version on the main bases). These spikes would mount on the bottom of the legs. If there is something better to put under the legs, I'm all ears:^)
The trick will be to make sure I have the proper height of the main base decided on, then make the smaller platform high enough to float just a bit (1/4"-1/2") above it.
Don't blame you for feeling nervous about screwing up your platform. Mine are just off the shelf cutting boards from Bed Bath and Beyond, but weren't cheap.
One thing I learned in using hole saw bits is it is best to drill a pilot hole all the way through first, with just the inside drill bit size. That way the larger bit doesn't try to stray as much.
