RE: MMG's are gone !

Hi John,

I mounted the inductors and capacitors on a piece of MDF that floats inside the actual box on top of a piece of bubble wrap. I also have a piece of Dynamat adhered onto the MDF. Make sure that the MDF does not touch the sides of the box. The inductors are held in place using nylon ties which go through holes that were drilled into the floating MDF/Dynamat. The larger capacitors are also attached in the same manner. Smaller sized caps and or resistors can be held in place with a dab of silicone.

I also discovered that weight actually helps as well and ended up using some ceramic tiles as the base and top of my crossover boxes. On the boxes I’m currently building, I plan to do the same except route the tiles into the wood bottoms and tops purely for cosmetic reasons.

Make sure that when you attach your wires to the drives, you clean up the quick connect male tabs and solder the wires into the small hole on the tap and eliminate using the quick connects. I’m sure you are planning on using binding posts, but try bypassing them and see if you hear a difference. When an inmate in here told me to eliminate my Vampire posts, I gave it a try and was quite shocked with the results. I used double runs of 30ga magnet wire for all my internal and external wire.

Last but not least, I have my current boxes sitting on the wood platforms behind the drivers. I am using spikes on some metal cups that prevent marking the wood. I thought about moving the XO boxes off the bases but then you have an issue with longer wire which would also be a trade off so I ended up going with the more conventional layout. I heard that some use sand or rice to cover all the components in the box but I haven’t done so yet. It would make in a pain when messing around with different caps.

Hoshi
