RE: Sunfire vs. McIntosh Amp for Magnepan 3.6

Just to make things a bit more confusing I am also now throwing in the MC402 as a possiblility. The dealer has a floor model demo that he would sell me at a discount. My out of pocket would go up to around $8500, but I would have 400 W / channel.

So do you guys think there is a significant upgrade in going to the larger McIntosh amp (MC402 vs MC252)? I am thinking it is, but maybe it is just overkill. Of course by the time I am spending this much I don't want to stare at the MC252 and keep thinking to myself that I should have spent the extra and gotten what I really wanted. Buyers remorse at going cheap, if you know what I mean.

I have to admit that a friend of mine had McIntosh 500W/ch amp (as I remember at least) 15 years ago, and I really fell in love with it. Both looks and sound. I realize as some have pointed out that there are other hi-end amps by the time I am talking about this kind of money, but I have never heard any amps I liked more than the McIntosh.

I may still hook up my Sunfire and just be pleased as punch with the sound. So it is still a debate in my mind. I may want to have either an in home demo or take my Sunfire to the dealer so I can get a side by side comparison.

As much as I have always liked my Sunfire I suspect the McIntosh will be the winner. But I am definately looking for advice.
