RE: Acoustic Treatment - Magnepan 1.7 - Funky room

Shane,

I am more optimistic about your situation than some of the others, particularly given that the goal is to make things BETTER and not perfect. On the one hand, your room is never going to be perfect. On the other hand, I would not rule out the possiblity that with acoustic treatment that your room could be just as good overall, if not better, than many untreated rooms that have a more favorable layout. Again, I would talk to the folks at GIK who practical experience with all types of rooms and get their input. I am not affiliated with GIK, only a happy customer.

I have a friend whose system cost about $20,000 more than my system. Before getting my GIK 244s, his system in his "untreated" room (it had a floor rug, normal furniture, etc.) sounded better than my system in my untreated room. After getting the GIK 244s, my system now sounds better than his. (Of course, his system in MY ROOM would probably sound even better.) This experience has convinced me that the experts who say that room acoustics are 50%+ of how your system sounds are correct on this point. After doing some research, I now understand that much of this is based on the physics of sound waves -- for example, how waves bouncing back and forth can cause "peaks" and "nulls" and result in an uneven frequency response no matter what the dimensions of your room (assuming a residential room). This is where broadband absorption and diffusion can make a huge difference.

I understand why people might use rugs on the wall (e.g., prefer the looks of a rug, already have the rugs, etc.). However, if you google the absorption coefficients of rugs/carpet, it in no way compares to the absorption coefficients of products like the GIK 244, particularly in the, say, 50Hz to 500Hz region which are tougher to deal with. So, if it is feasible in your situation to use a product like a GIK 244, it will be WAY better than rugs on the wall. Of course, if this type of product is not feasible (e.g., spouse factor), then a rug would typically be better than bare drywall or a picture hanging on the wall.

Good luck and keep us posted!
