Try a simple test.

With everything quiet, clap your hands while standing near your listening chair. Listen for the room response. If you hear a metallic twang, that is the prolonged echoes from the hard surfaces. This will limit your audio performance no matter what else you do. Wall treatments, carpeting, and absorbent furniture are the only ways to reduce this problem.

You don't need a large room to get better sound, just attention to the reflectivity of the surfaces and positions of the speakers.
