Absolutely true, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.Indeed extensive isolation from vibration, select choice of synergistic cables and minimisation of a/c anomalies are all CRUCIAL.
My point being solely to give a leg up to the 'unseen' and thus most often overlooked, or under considered aspect of the MOST POTENT and apparent influence.
Much the same as changing the speakers is FAR more audibly variant than a cable, or roller bearing or CBF or amp and front end for that matter.Case example:
I have a good friend who had spend 10's of thousands of dollars on his (excellent)choice of equipment and tweaks, completely undermined by poor component layout and room acoustics.Within an hour of me asking him to allow me to indulge HIM, and ask him to temporarily forget all conventional considerations (including his insistence that his wife would never allow for speakers to be placed too far into the room and the coffee table relocated etc...)
I had facilitated HUGE improvements to all aspects of his systems fidelity.
AT ZERO COST no less... temporarliy pegging a duvet next to the first relection zone on one close proximity wall for example.
Moving the speakers into a less resonant position, relocating a chief detractor, the glass coffeee table right between the speakers and so on & so forth...Whilst I proceeded he was almost aghast, although essentially the room was unchanged and nothing was added or removed.
His wife is not a audio fanatic but does have a healthy appreciation for quality music and respects her husbands commitment to financial destruction via hifi, JUST JOKING !!Anyway I sat him down to listen, with the emphasis that simply marking the relative points that I had shifted things to would enable a 2 minute adjustment to 'normal marital considerations'
And he was devastated, TOTALLY.... said he could not beleive that his system could sound so good, had never sounded better in years of upgrades etc..etc..
His wife came home shortly thereafer, and post de-brief of MY intrusion (!), sat down to listen to her favorite piece of music, she responded with the same positive reaction as he, and their lives have never been the same since.... o.k, so I' might be overstating my point, but their room to this day remains far more optimised and ready to shift into top gear in a flash.
He also now has the wifes thumbs up to have me custom build 'proper' colour matched 'minimal visual impact' acoutic treatments.
Which I undertake using professional software analysis of room frequency response and so forth.Sure the above may be all too common news to a lot of Asylum inmates, but still, all too often gets marginalised by an endless amount of 'expensive goodies' to play tweakypops with !
I love gadgets too, but would rather spend my money on music, and be listening to it at the end of the day... ;-)
