Transducers are the most profoundly variable part of a system. The incredibly different sonic signatures of the multitude of make/model loudspeakers shows that loudspeaker design involves a great deal of art along with science.
Each loudspeaker design produces a particular character -- when that character is complemented by upstream gear, loudspeaker vibration control, and room acoustics, the particular voicing can sing in a manner intended by the designer.
The way I came to better know my loudspeakers voicing was to "try to do things that the loudspeakers did not want to do". Trying to take the loudspeakers in directions that did not complement their intrinsic sonic signature brought about enough pondering to realize this particular notion.
The bottom line, IME: In order to provide greater sonic satisfaction, there is only so much one can do to tune a system in the direction of what one may wish for. Particular loudspeakers may need to be replaced with more pleasing ones rather than trying to push them in a direction that does not jive with their essential sonic nature.
