"I assume that's a typo???" - LOL! It's worse than a typo, it was a total brain fart! :O)

My bad!

>>> "I wonder if there is any mileage in comparing bands to classical composers and the fact that any orchestra can play the music.
Possibly not a lot, but considering that even the original bands didn't play on some much loved 60s albums... no Ringo on the first Beatles recordings, only McGuinn playing on the first Byrds album, this might be much ado about nothing. Many bands hire extra musicians for live performance and when it comes to it, isn't it supposed to be the music that's important?" <<<

True, live performances of favorite studio recordings are important, of course, but how the music is presented can mean just as much to the concert goer. An orchestra is essentially different from a rock group, providing the audience with an entirely different set of expectations. A rock group will impress or disappoint based on the energy of the group and each individual musician even more than which songs are played, and fans expect as little embellishment from side musicians as possible.

In some cases, the theatrics or energy of the musicians can move an audience in spite of inconsistent performances and having a live sound that is absolutely nothing like the studio work (Led Zeppelin is a good example), occasionally even sloppy! But the same holds true of groups whose live recordings sound too much like the studio work (Fogerty era Creedence comes to mind).

In rock music there is a balance between involving live performances and recreating studio recordings in a live setting; that balance often rests on improvisation and solo variations. IMHO, if a group employs session players or side musicians to recreate studio recordings in a live setting, they're striving to be too literal; I'd rather hear the more energetic honed down version (The Who back in the late 60's performing Tommy live for instance).

Cheers,
AuPh
