I think you may be right about the date of Barrett's departure and its probably 1968.
I wonder if there is any mileage in comparing bands to classical composers and the fact that any orchestra can play the music.
Possibly not a lot, but considering that even the original bands didn't play on some much loved 60s albums... no Ringo on the first Beatles recordings, only McGuinn playing on the first Byrds album, this might be much ado about nothing.
Many bands hire extra musicians for live performance and when it comes to it, isn't it supposed to be the music that's important?
actually, I think I like that point enough to stick to it.
