In fact I would say that Mick & Co. ceased being the Rolling Stones (except as a valuable trademark) when Bill Wyman finally retired from the group! Now it's the Glimmer Twins, Watts & Co., incorporated.IMHO, the Rolling Stones have been a gray area for over 30 years, ever since Mick Taylor left the group in '74 and Ron Wood was selected because he provided a good party-pal for Keith Richards. But for all intent and purposes, they had been pushing that envelope since the '72 tour through having augmented the group sound courtesy of a horn section they would tour with consistently thereafter. There is nothing inherently wrong with the horn section, mind you, but it does change the fundemental dynamic of the 'original' five piece rock group as a live performing entity. Brian Jones was the jack-of-all-trades who supplied various instrumental breaks for songs during the Stone's early career; this can never be recaptured, only pastiched.
Of course, this is just my opinion; other's views may vary.
