Home Rocky Road

From Classic Rock to Progessive to hip hop to today's hot new tunes!

Sorry, but without Steve Hackett it just won't be the same Genesis, even fronted by Peter Gabriel.

IMHO, Steve Hackett's signature 'sound' was integral to the group of the Fox Trot/Selling England/Lamb Lies Down era, much less so after Gabriel's departure for his solo career. I can't imagine some of those songs being performed without Steve Hackett's distinctive style.

Of course, YMMV; there's nothing wrong with that! It wasn't my intent to start a debate about what constitutes a reunited group and what doesn't, but in trying to express opinions these threads will end up wherever they end up.

My simple rule of thumb is this: if a group performs songs that are relatively close to the original live sound and there are still key members present, then the group might accurately be called the original's name, especially if certain hits were released under various line-ups. Groups which cannot, in my estimation, be called 'original' either have entirely different line-ups or include lesser members who are actually poseurs trying to legitimize the use of the original group's name.

Examples of groups which, as I see it, just don't cut the mustard without specific key members (regardless of their status as original members): Creedence Clearwater Revisited (without John Fogerty's distinctive voice, guitar & writing), the Doors (without Jim Morrison's voice, iconic image and poignant writing), Grand Funk Railroad (as a five-piece & without Mark Farner's voice & guitar fronting), Journey (without Greg Rollie and/or Steve Perry), UFO (without Michael Schenker)

Groups that somehow survive and thrive by reforming around one or two original members: Wishbone Ash (Andy Powell), Savoy Brown (Kim Simmonds), Steppenwolf (John Kay), Uriah Heep (Mick Box; Lee Kerslake), Jethro Tull (Ian Anderson; Martin Barr, who has been in the group since the late 60's), Procol Harum (Gary Brooker; Keith Reid), Bad Company (Paul Rodgers; Simon Kirke) and Focus (Thijs van Leer)

Passable examples (some work incredibly well; others, just barely): Mountain (without Felix Pappilardi), Pink Floyd (without Roger Waters), Queen (without Freddie Mercury), Rolling Stones (without Bill Wyman; without Brian Jones OR Mick Taylor & with Ron Wood as their replacement), Ten Years After (without Alvin Lee)

Groups centered around one member that have changed styles to the point of being a different group and still garnering a following: King Crimson (Robert Fripp), ...(other examples)?

Note: Gee Dave, sorry if you get some sort of 'gunky stuff' that makes you scrub your computer; just between you and me, I don't think that's likely, but have you considered acquiring a sneeze guard like those found around most restaurant buffets? BTW, are you sure that you're not getting the gunky stuff from those 'other' sites you visit? ;^)

Note: I'm sure that Best Buy's Geek Squad can help you wipe that gunk off of your computer for a price! :o)

Cheers,
