I'm not so sure. If this is psychodrama country (I get like that occasionally!) and deals with a whole "new" America, and from the subject matter and repeated themes of the album, not a totally nice place, then whilst it was waaaaaay out further than whatever else was around at the time... The Eagles(!!!???)... I would put that start of the country influence at The Notorious Byrds Brothers, where the psychedelic-country interface seemed to emerge, at least as far as an Englishman was concerned.
This album contains traces (to my ears) of the "jazz" album McGuinn had talked of making (or was it psychedelic jazz?) alongside the new (to them) country sound.
And this was a good 6 or 7 years earlier than No Other.
Maybe its memory and maybe its the distance from California to London, but that's how it looks to me.
