"As a matter of fact one of his best selling albums is entitled "Desire." But your analogy is weak inasmuch as Dylan doesn’t fit the mold of the typical rocker. He might best be described as a folk singer who wrote some country/rock tunes once upon a time before falling into a bottle of scotch. Most devotees describe him as a “poet.†But to my original point, when it comes to musical sophistication Dylan’s work is embarrassingly simplistic compared to, say, Beethoven's chamber music.Dylan was good at rhyme scheme. Wow. And much of his work the past twenty years has been quite forgettable. Moreover, his early work sounds painfully dated. Not so Beethoven’s string quartets. Why do you suppose that is? "
I just have a few things to say here. Dylan hardly just wrote about lust. The album you point to, "Desire" was a great seller for him because of the song "Hurricane" which has absolutely nothing to do with love or lust.
Last time I checked,Beethoven didnt write lyrics to his music...so how can you compare the two? Dylan specialized in writing poetry, Beethoven was only a musical arranger/composer. Comparing apples to oranges.
As for Dylan's work sounding "painfully dated", well, I think you have to consider something here. Beethoven's work has been arranged and recorded thousands of times...many even very recently. With Bob Dylan and modern musicians, there is one master tape. They dont go back 50 years later and re-record everything using new technology and techniques to modernize the sound. Of course it sounds more dated!! It would only be fair if you compared Beethoven's original recording...if there were such a thing.
Dylan is not even my favorite...but probably a top 5 for me. The lyrics are what makes his music timeless...not the recording. With Beethoven, its the composition...not the performance that is genius.
