we have had songwriters who's work has stood up since the 60s and 70s today because of such universal themes. You are forgetting that many of the great songwriters didnt write lyrics to rock music...they wrote poetry, and then worked it into a song. Surely you dont think all poetry is childish and fleeting. Guys like Roger Waters, Bob Dylan, John Lennon...their words will be with us forever, and wont lose any of their power. If you want a taste of how deep and powerful lyrics to rock music can be...check out an album like Amused to Death, or The Wall, or DSOTM, or The Final Cut...(yes I am a big fan of the lyrical genius that is Roger Waters). You may get tired of it...but its usually because of the repetitiveness of the music...not the lyrics. I must stress that writers like the 3 I listed above are WRITERS first, musicians second.
