"I find that to be the case with *all* rock lyrics. The lyrics of Dylan, The Beatles, Stones, The Who, et al., ring dated and shallow, likewise their music."I personally think Dylan and Lennon (Beatles) were amongst the greatest lyricists of all time.... I also disagree about the Beatles' music in general....
"To paraphrase Gertrude Stein, when it comes to musical sophistication, there's no there, there. That's why a hundred years hence people will still be listening to Ellington, Miles Davis, Bach and Beethoven but not Led Zep."
I think "Stairway" will be Zep's claim to fame.... I've known people who think that song alone made the band legendary.... But I do think the Beatles are forever. Just listen to the jazz covers alone. Maybe hundreds of them.
"Sophisticated rock music is an oxymoron. It can dazzle a seventeen-year-old but most of us grow up to cultivate a more demanding musical palate, if you will."
You need to listen to Rush's "Xanadu".... Or Moody Blues "Nights in White Satin".... Or Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody".... Or the Beatles' "Michelle" or "Penny Lane".... Or the Doors' "Light My Fire".... Or Billy Joel's "Piano Man".... Or the Who's "You Better You Bet".... Or Elton John's "Funeral for a Friend".... Or Clapton's "Layla".... Or Kansas' "Magnum Opus".... Or even Coldplay's "Fix You"....
I love Rachmaninoff and Beethoven like a few do, but I don't think rock is devoid of the "sophistication" like you claim. But like anything else, this is subjective.
