Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

You can have it at home easily

THis sort of thing has been available for home use now for some years.

Many HT receivers include acoustic correction software such as the Audyssey system used by Denon, Marantz, NAD, and Onkyo. TACT and some other manufacturers including Audyssey produce such systems in a component to be added to your existing system.

I've also seen instructions on the web somewhere for a DIY system designed to correct just for room modes.

I've used the Audyssey system in a HT receiver in my TV system which is in a different room to my audio system. The room my audio system is in has physical acoustic treatments—a number of REALTraps panels in the corners and at first reflection points, and it's in a carpeted room. The TV system is in a room with a bare ceramic tiled floor and a greater area of glass in windows and doors than the room in which the audio system is located. Without using the Audyssey functionality, the sound in the TV room tends to be hard and bright. With it, it sounds more natural and bass response is definitely smoother and more rich and even. The Audyssey system doesn't correct reverberation time but it does provide EQ and it calculates separate corrections for each speaker which are designed to deliver an improved result over a larger sweet spot than you would get without it. All in all it does a reasonable job, though I preferred listening to music on the audio system which has higher quality components and speakers.

Note that there are other ways to do some of these things. Using multiple subs in several locations in a room can smooth modal response over the sub's operating range without the need to compute a correction, but you need to find some way of having the sound from the subs arrive simultaneously with the sound from the speakers so that requires juggling with placement and you also have to balance the levels for the subs which can be messy. I think some HT systems these days can do this for 2 subs but not more.

It's also worth noting that I've seen a comment from Audyssey indicating that the better the acoustics in your room are without their system in use, the better the results you will get with the system. You still have to pay attention to basic setup of the system and physical room treatments can also help.

So you can do this sort of thing at home. Results will depend on the system you use, your room, and the quality of your setup process (both physical room and system setup and acoustic correction system setup) . I found it took a few tries with the Audyssey system to get the best results.
