Re: How does the preamp affect sound quality?

you're correct of course - amps, cabling, etc *all* are in the loop - i guess that's why there can be such *spirited* debate on the subject... ;~) personally, i've found preamps to have more of an effect than amps, & interconnects have the least affect of all. as far as source components, well, of course, ya wanna maximize each one, but the fono will not affect the cd-player... except mebbe by sounding so much better that cd-use is discouraged? ;~)

while i understand how it *all* contributes to the end result, when i say the preamp is most important, i am referring to the law of diminishing returns, which kicks in soonest w/cabling, then amps, then sources (which are closer to the preamp than the amp), then the preamp... imo, of course... ;~)

as far as speakers go, these have to rank along-side the preamp as being able to spend lotsa money prior to the law of diminishing returns kicking in. or, mebbe even speakers should be at the end of the chain: speakers are a whole different animal, imo, cuz there can be such a wide variation of how the actual soundwave is created in the air, & there's such a wide variation amongst audiophiles as to what they like... also, the most expensive components out there are speakers...
