preamp is the *most* important component, imo - *everyting* gets touched by it...get a toobed preamp, buy it used, spend a lot of money! ;~) my personal preference is melos; others may have other opinions... if ya get a toobed line-stage, it will impart its flavor on a s/s fono-stage....
