Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Soundstage is one of the most subjective of attributes

There is certainly no objective measure for it. If we wanted to explore the factors generating more or less soundstage depth, the proper approach, (IMO), would to correlate more or less apparent depth with characteristics of the component -- that is, if a consensus could be found on the soundstage depth for a given component as attested by a significant number of listeners. (I'd say good luck with that.)

I'd speculate that the eventual conclusion would be soundstage depth is caused by certain distortion characteristics, i.e. it is "fake" not matter how much you enjoy it.

It is well known that some tube equipment can create "imaging layering", (a brilliant term used by AbeCollins as I recall). I myself have noticed it when using certain tubes in my Sonic Frontiers Line 1 preamp: it was a pleasant effect but wasn't on the recording itself. (I'm using different tubes in my Line 1 today which are more transparent but produced less "image layering".)
