RE: How many watts do I need?

I run a system similar to yours-dual 12" woofers in Jensen-Onken cabinet, horn midrange and bullet tweeter. It is rated at 99 db/w efficient. Your 100 db/w rating did not say what was the nominal impedance of the speaker, but assuming it is 8 ohms, we have similar systems. My speakers are in a similar sized room as yours. I don't listen to the system at very high volume levels and I am very comfortable using a 4 wpc amplifier. Whether any given power level is sufficient depends a lot on the size of the room and how loud you want to play your system. Because I really like the sound of lower-powered tube amps, I am willing to accept that they may not be at their best for the brief moments when I want more juice. It is a matter of priorities and picking what compromises you can live accept.

I have seen wattage meters that can be used to measure watts being delivered while a speaker is playing. A friend of mine use one on his horn system and we could see that peaks never approached 1/2 watt (he had very efficient horns). Perhaps you can find a similar meter to measure what your current amp delivers under various conditions so you can figure out how much watts you need.
