It did the "tube thing" better than any tubed component I've spent time with and it had more powerful bass as well. The "conditions of comparisons" were the same as I audition all components, not to mention music... by listening.
As for your story, well, if I were exposed to two identical amps, I'd choose the one that was the cheaper. Not having auditioned several amps at once, I can't say if there are two that sound identical. In my numerous comparisons of any two, in no cases did the two under comparison sound identical. Very very close in some cases, but not identical.
