In Reply to: No difference - “sighted†listening has the exactly the SAME problems you mention posted by Caymus on December 24, 2005 at 19:29:52:
Actually, I'm not "claiming" anything - I'm questioning. If sighted listening produces too many false positives and DBT's too many false negatives, I guess it's a matter of preference. I'm questioning how DBT is considered superior... I'm not saying it isn't, I'm merely questioning it.
>However, DBTs offer a significant advantage over “sighted†tests to remove the fixed expectation bias from interfering with our listening.<
Yes - provided there are biases that need removal. So far no one using your argument has explained to my satisfaction how in many cases, my biases were overcome by a simple sighted listening test. Several times the component I thought would sound better did not. Several times I WANTED a particular component to sound better but it did not. Recently and much to my consternation, I heard a solid state pre/power combo that sounded as good or better than any tube gear I've ever heard - and I'm a confirmed tube-aholic. If I could afford it, I'd give it a serious audition. If you knew me, you'd know that my biases are strongly against anything with transistors in it.
The point is that "biases" are very often beaten to death by contrary experience... more often that by DBT's, I dare say.
