You could ask that same question for, let's see, car engines. The Otto or Diesel engine as it was made 100 years ago was able to get a car from A to B. Nice, everyone's happy, why improve them. Modern engines are more efficient, consume less, pollute less, last longer. Still, they don't do anything different than the century old engine, they only get a car from A to B. I don't think that anyone seriously thinks that there was a fundamental problem with Otto's or Diesel's design (or Wankel's or Elsbett's, for that matter).
