Apple assumes that every user knows nothing about computers and only uses whatever Apple determines that you will use.
It seems like many updates break something because seemingly, they don't care. When I upgraded to Yosemite, Apple decided that I wanted the new version of Apache without key utilities that were standard in Mavericks. Then, I couldn't use ssh to get into the Mac Mini. Of course, Apple decided that I should use the default port and changed my changes to their default setting. It just goes on and on.
My motto is 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it!'
