Companies like Apple are between a rock and hard drive, ahh, place.
Security is such a big thing now. But, inevitably it causes problems for legit users. And, it certainly gobbles up processing cycles.
I have a 2006 iMac with a Core 2 Duo processor in the "lab" here. I replaced the hard drive with an SSD and maxed out the memory. There's a Boot Camp partition on it running Windows 7 for various computer driven test gear and for simulations. It runs great. The work issued laptop I have is barely faster due to all the corporate babysitting and security software running in the background.
