RE: Observations on NAD's implementation of DLNA, AptX, AirPlay, SPDIF in the D 7050

I've owned a few NAD pieces over the years starting with the venerable 3020 and lastly a NAD AVR (757 maybe) about 5 years ago. I had always been satisfied with. The NAD products I had.

A couple of weeks ago I was looking to rebuild a small modest system. I was considering the NAD C356BEE and Cambridge Audio 651 integrated amps. I caught site of the D7050 and became enamored with its sleek looks and feature set. I did an about face and home the NAD D7050 went.

I got everything hooked up and away I went for a listening session. Right off the bat I thought is sounded thin, something not quite there. But hey, it was brand new and so were the Focal speakers so a little break in was necessary to really see (hear) what I had. Twenty minutes in the music suddenly stopped. I looked over at the system and could see the power standby on the NAD was blinking red and worse yet the the readout that clearly said "overheating". I quickly shut everything down and disconnected the unit. Did I have something improperly connected that caused a short or something? I don't know. It's a pretty simple system set up and not much you could do wrong. The NAD D7050 was mildly, mildly warm to the touch. So I started over carefully checking all connections. I waited until the unit had cooled down and powered up again. I started playing music again. Once again after 20 minutes the same thing occurred. I had to leave my place for about three hours. When I returned I decided to give it one more try. Everything connected and everything turned on away I went. Passing 20 minutes of time without a problem I felt a little relieved but still concerned. At 11:19 PM It happened for the third time ( and final time). Back in the box it went.

I'm lucky to work with a good dealer. His business is by appointment only and not open on Saturday. That late Friday night I sent an email to him. He got back with me and arranged to meet me on Saturday. We discussed several options and I chose to go in another direction.

I am sure my experience with the NAD is an exception but it sure spooked me off that product.
