RE: Complete PC audio for $2000?

Hi,

Well, a 27" iMac retails around this price, add Audirvana Pro (or whatever the payware version is called) and you are go to play music. Or get a Mac Mini, add Audirvana and you are go.

In your system I would probably recommend a computer grade mains noise filter added to the PC's mains connection (and any accessories such as external hard drives, screens etc).

If you are reasonably computer literate and can install Windows and some software, you can very decent and quiet (fan noise) all in one units. Use Windows 7, J-River and the results can be excellent. Again, don't forget the power filter.

Finally, if you can build up a computer from parts, you can build an excellent Media Server with "HiFi Looks", using a variety of cases designed for AV computers.

Personally I am running a system with an fanless Atom 330 motherboard, fanless ATI Radeon 4350 Graphics card, fanless "Pico-Supply" powersupply with external fanless 12V/10A power brick. Hard drives are three 2TB plus a solid state drive (64G) for OS. It is good enough to handle 1080p Video, Audio, no trouble at all.

The case was the single most expensive item, an OrigenAE S16T unit with a 7" Touchscreen in the front. It also has build noise reduction for the hard drives etc. It is a VERY quiet computer in use.

It did cost less than 2,000 US even at the the time when it was re-build. This is actually the 2nd "computer" in the same case, motherboard, graphics etc got upgraded around 2 years ago. I guess I'm due another upgrade at some time, for no no need though.

At 20 bits, you are on the verge of dynamic range covering fly-farts-at-20-feet to intolerable pain. Really, what more could we need?
