Home High Efficiency Speaker Asylum

Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

RE: Any bad experiences with dipole bass?

R57 - I am trying to avoid falling for loudspeaker "flavor of the month" traps.
That's a good idea.
Seems like anytime you read about a DIY speaker on the web it is always the "greatest thing since sliced bread".
You are aware of Beraneks Law? The best way to confirm that truth is to listen to it yourself, unfortunately (or fortunately) not always possible.
So before I start trying to piss uphill and get good bass out of some drivers mounted on an open baffle I'd like to know if any of you have tried and felt it sounded bad.
Would the answers generated be indicative of the weakness of the format or the utter incompetence of the designer?
I am not concerned about the size of the baffle or the need for watts/EQing/large Xmax.
Still single I see :-).
I just want good sounding bass
Who doesn't?
Duke made some good points. But things are not so simple as just "dipole bass". Science needs to be applied. Linkwitz's site should be like you bible. You should have read it enough times by now to recite verses. Or at least use his free space SPL calculator. Xbaffle (non SL) is another tool.
John K's website is also a good resource. Have you read all his tech articles?
Do you realize that neither SL nor John K use pure dipole bass? Rather, SL wisely uses a pressure source (monopole) for very LF and a velocity source (dipole) above, up through the modal region (with a cardioid pattern @xo). John K uses a cardioid, which has attributes of a pressure source, but radiates less power, like a dipole. Perhaps you need to examine the different ways to achieve your goal of good sounding bass, to see how a dipole (most likely OB) can be used most effectively.

cheers,

AJ
