I wouldn't say that tube amps lack bass slam. However, it is generally true that solid-state amps have an easier time developing deep impactful bass.
Some tube amps with a good deal of bass slam include VTL, Manley, and some larger ARC. In terms of lacking bass slam, CJ comes to mind. I had better bass slam and overall performance from the less expensive AES/Cary SixPac monoblocks vs the CJ Premier 11a, for example. The CJ is supposedly the more powerful amp but the SixPacs handily outperformed them.
I am presently using a pair of Manley Neo-Class 250 tube monoblocks.
I wouldn't consider the Odyssey amps to be giant killers but they are great bargains. I've owned two of them and they are outstanding values but I have also owned modest Pass Labs amps like the X150 and X150.5 which in my opinion are noticeably better than the Odyssey amps, and not just in the bass. While the extra piled on caps in the Odyssey amps may help a little they don't help THAT much, or not enough to bring them up to the level of the basic Pass Labs I mentioned.
