RE: Drivers for dipole basses?

91.217.248.11

Pictureguy; that's a good question.

The reason for this is that I have owned and heard many many Magneplanars up to 3.7, and even though I love their mids & highs, they just won't give the basses as I wish. When listening music with organs or large drums, or even some pop/rock albums, there is always missing some body with Maggie's basses, IMO.

I even started looking for other kind of speakers to replace Maggies, but after many many testing sessions, I couldn't find anything (reasonably priced) that would match Maggies on the mids & highs. The best option that I found was active Gradient Revolution, with 2 * 12" SLS per side on a dipole setup. But still, Maggie's upper range sounds better for me.

So, I started thinking, why wouldn't I get the best from both worlds; dynamic dipoles for the basses, and Maggies for upper range. With DEQX it would be quite easy to match the drivers, test different crossover frequencies, do the driver- & room correction, etc. etc.

The reason for this initial idea of 200hz crossover frequency was that Gradient's use this setup, and if I've understood correctly, some 3.x Maggies are also using low pass crossovers near 200hz. If commercial manufacturers are using it successfully, why wouldn't I?? I also think (I really don't know, correct me if I'm wrong!) that many bass drum sounds go much over 100hz, and I really wouldn't want to miss any body or weight from basses by crossing them over too low.

So, I'm not looking for a subwoofer, I'm looking for best possible basses for my DIY 3-way system.
