"MMGes" sounds like something Golum might say. :-)
I think the problem is that this isn't a unique issue, like "it's." If the plural were formed without an apostrophe, it would never be possible to tell, except by context, whether the model number include a lower case "s" or not. And some do. We know that MMGs is the plural of MMG, but does everybody?
But, really, from a personal perspective, I don't much care. I just put the apostrophe there because it's what I was taught in school and it's a long-ingrained habit. Since it's a recognized usage, and since it has a rationale in this case, I can't think of any reason not to use it.
On the other hand, it could be confused with the possessive. As in "My MMG's diaphragm melted." That's clear from context. Still, whoever came up with the idea of multiple uses of the apostrophe wasn't thinking very hard. Surely, they could have used another punctuation mark? Of course, the adoption of the French plural conflicts with the possessive as well -- a worser problem for most of us. Remember those sentences they tortured us with in grade school, "the Joneses's car"? At one point, I recall being told that the possessive "s" was omitted after a classical proper noun ending with "s" (Jesus' cloak, Hercules' bow), but not after a modern name (the Jones's house). The page I looked at just has it as optional and my feeling is you should let the copy editor do whatever the hell he pleases!
