RE: MMG’s at RMAF….Your help please

Actually, it's the speakers that have changed, I still have the XPA-2. The MMG's were my temporary speakers -- actually, I got them for my home office (this was before the Mini Maggie was out) and liked them so much I used them as my temporary main system, to replace my old Tympani 1-D's, which were too big for my current listening room. That gave me time to round up a pair of Tympani IVa's, and the MMG's have been given to a friend. The Emotiva will initially power the IVa's, then end up doing bass duty when I triamp.

My somewhat unscientific assessment is that the XPA-2 is a fine amp -- not quite the equal of the very smoothest, but there's a question of proportion here -- at some point the amp becomes so expensive that you'd be better off getting the 1.7's or 3.7's. It's certainly good enough so that I'll feel no great rush in triamping the IVa's.

Thanks for the info on the table DWM, I didn't know they hadn't released it. They first showed it years ago and I thought I'd seen a price quoted somewhere.

You're right that buying used has pitfalls. If you get a late 1.6 (you can check the SN with Magnepan) it shouldn't have delamination, because of the new and improved adhesives. But of course damage is possible, if someone left out the fuse or something. And they can be damaged in shipping, Fedex did that to one of my IVa's.

I've known Wendell to be surprisingly frank in suggesting that people should go with an older model, BTW. But I understand your reluctance. There must have been some people at the RMAF exhibit who also know the 1.6 . . .
