Magnepan will never do upgrades. They will restore to the original specification.
I have not heard 3.6 and 3.7 side by side. When I heard the 3.7 they sounded a bit thin compared to my own 3.6. It was certainly not a fair comparsion, different rooms and electronics (mine a lot cheaper...). The 3.6 can be tweaked in more ways than the 3.7. You can easily run the 3.6 via an active crossover and use two smaller power amplifiers in place of one large.
