Yes, I think that's true -- the separate drivers allowed them to use a lower mass diaphragm.

This guy measured his 20.1 mid and said it's 3.7 ohms:

But I don't know how it's wired. As you say, doubling magnets doubles the Bl product so resistance can be doubled as well. But I don't know anything here, even whether the new midrange has the same width or number of loops as the old one.

I'm wondering if they did some trick with the buttons on the 20.7 woofer to create a de facto midbass segment near the midrange so they could go to the single pole crossover. That's just a speculation based on the 3.7, I haven't seen them with the socks off. There are other approaches they might have taken as well to increase the usable bandwidth of the drivers.
