I made a half hearted effort at measurement for the bass panels at 300 hz with the S'phile test CD and the calibrated vol control on my DAC/pre a few years back. It is an expansion effect, not compression as the lower level signals are lower still in output than they would have been in a linear driver, and there is a threshold effect. I attribute it to the stiff wire first, then the depth of the channel between the magnets and the holes, and to the tensioned membrane. It adds up to resistance to low level signals.

Once you are into the driver's linear range then it is fine, but you need to play a bit "louder than life" to get all of the signal into the linear range.
