RE: Why, Davey? Shirley if you consider the room + speakers as the sound-delivery device ...

Well it is only going to really work at the spot where you stick the microphone(s) but it does work. Besides most speakers are relatively unflat to begin with. Finally, I have found that it is fruitless to try to fill in holes in the bass response as you can boost several db and the hole barely budges (as the suckout is room modal usually). However, from about 200hz and up you can make dramatic improvements in the room response. You can also tailor it to your tastes, for example, having a falling off in the highs rather than being ruler flat in-room, which sounds too bright to me.

"Here's a concept for you to think about. If we make the speakers flatter, does the room automatically become flatter as a result? "

In most cases the room response will be close to the sum of the on and off-axis FR response of the speaker in question. The flatter these are the flatter the in-room response will be.

This begs the question though, how important is this really to long term satisfaction? If you take a speaker that has a relatively poor FR but is superb in terms of control over cabinet and driver resonances, break up, crossover optimization, bass alignment etc. and you smooth it out I bet that it will sound better than a speaker with a very flat FR (on and off-axis) but with high Q bass, driver break up and cabinets that flap.

As it stood, my acoutstats had very flat FR above 200hz (less than +-2db up to 10Khz) so the only equalization I applied was to reduce a room mode at 65Hz by 7db or so. Other speakers I have had in the past needed more as do my current ones but all benefit greatly from being flattened when necessary.
