Sorry, just realised I hadn't specifically answered your questions.
How does the DPA-1 compare to other preamp/DACs?-well firstly, it works on a regular basis which is better than the DCX2496! Compare with my previous preamp/DAC a 13-year-old Audio Synthesis DAX Decade the overall presentation is much smoother, particularly at the high frequencies. I think this is something that Lyngdorf take very seriously, that is removing the "digital", or perhaps one should say "CD" sound, something to do with the serious filtering at 20 kHz. I suppose it sounds more analog in this respect.
How much benefit from the room perfect module?-I suspect that will depend very much on the acoustic properties of your room. I never thought I had any particular problems with my own room and the 20% adjustment that the room perfect makes would tend to confirm this. I don't have any physical Room treatment as such. Even given the 20% level of adjustment I do think it is worthwhile. You can't order the DPA-1 without the room perfect module, but I think you can order the integrated amplifier without it. The cost here is, I think, £1400, so it ain't cheap.
Overall sound quality with Maggie's?-as I said in my first reply, I was dubious before I tried it. I've ended up with a very smooth, non digital well focused sound with very much better bass than I had before. Again, I hope this helps
