Did you try a wider gap? I can't experiment with gap until I get 2 wooden bases (each side) made up, like yours, but I and a mate did an experiment last night which was very interesting. While he was sitting down listening, I inserted a 1/8" thick, inch-wide strip of felt into the gap between the mid/ribbon frame and the bass frame. My mate said this resulted in an immediate loss of "air" around the high frequencies.
Yes, we are trying to get the adjacent edges of the ribbon and the mid panel as close together as possible, to minimise phase problems at the XO frequency (the bass panel in your case) but by angling the 2 frames, we can equalise the driver distance anyway. Given the lack of "air" when I closed the gap, it may be that the top end gets even more airy when there's an inch or two gap?
