Well, I'm in your time zone - all those Yanquis are asleep!! :-)) ...

It is indeed bizarre that softwood frames produced a good-sounding result for you and hardwood frames have not. :-((

I'm not sure anyone else has made frames of softwood ... so mebbe you've made a fundamental discovery? (Unless Davey's poplar frames count as "soft wood"?) Certainly my #1 frames were made of one of the hardest woods you can get (good ol' Aussie "iron bark") and my current Frankenpan frames are not far behind, in terms of the Janko hardness scale.

Did you connect the drivers to the frames differently, with the hardwood frames? If I remember correctly, you sandwiched the drivers between two halves which were screwed/bolted together, when you made your initial, softwood frames? (I remember thinking that they truly deserved the "Frankenpan" name!! :-)) )

We're going to have to do some digging, I think, to uncover the problem? (But it's nearly my bedtime! :-)) )

Regards,

Andy
