With Windows there is constant pressure to upgrade....video card. Sound card. I had to add the special header and plugs for FireWire to my last PC....the mobo came with firewire outputs and kit.

Not to mention joining the 'driver of the week' club. Charter member, too.

I had a top-line Lian-Li case......like 4 fans....2 smaller input fans on lower front with airfilter.
Top output and back of case output fans. The Enermax PS I installed had 2 fans, 1 of which had its own thermostat control. Fan on CPU upgraded. Fan on Northbridge chip. Fan on Vid card.
It sounded like a Helicopter landing on the roof.

Constant 'Windows updates' and the odd 'service pack'.

Had to keep current AdAware. had to keep current antivirus. Had to delete EVERY E-mail I didn't recognize. Attachment? Delete! Watch out for the 'virus of the week'. Become friends with Anonymizer. Learn to manually close ports. Run behind Router Firewall. Find a friend with an old PC to strip and turn into a hardware firewall......Learn how to administer Smoothwall.
Run weekly scans of everything.

I was very happy with Win2Kpro until it gradually not only became unsupported, but obsolete. XPpro is great. Heading the same way as 2k. Vista? that's a laugh. Windows ME? bigger laugh.

And, since I am a photographer, I like the Mac for better color support and management. My calibrated display is terrific. Really great color profile support and using Gutenprint drivers on my Epson printer, I can match the screen with a print and both are terrific.
