If I were to experiment with metals, I would stay the heck away from steel. No Titanium either, as if I could afford it!
My first choice? Aluminum. Stuff doesn't ring. Can't make an aluminum bell. No fatigue strength which isn't an issue. Very low ductility, but 6000 series tube can be welded and hardened to T-6.
7000 series can be 'glued'. It is also as cheap as beer cans. Bar stock, tube, sheet, rod, ++
Other wacky stuff occurs, too, but I have no way of getting to MMC (metal matrix composites) or the really exotic stuff, like light metals.....Magnesium or Berylium, while I have no way of working with the real exotic stuff, carbon fiber / glass epoxy resin stuff.......
If poured concrete would work???? How about Corian? or some of the other designer 'plastics'...?
No, best bet for metals would be aluminum while I think Natures Composite, wood still has the edge in most categories.
Bamboo would be interesting to try.
Too much is never enough
