Crackling noise?

I’ve wanted to try Maggies for more than 25 years. In that time I never even heard a pair but was always curious. After I bought my Emotiva XPA-5 amp I realized I could now actually drive a pair. Over the next two months I read and read and read. I read each page of this board, although not every thread. Gotta love the internet.

Last week my wife and I drove to Denver to the only Magnepan dealer in the state and listened to 12’s, 1.7’s and 3.6’s. After an hour or so listening (Wow! Beautiful music!) we decided that the 1.7’s fitted us best. the 3.6’s were out of our financial reach, the 12’s sounded more compressed (at least to us, on that day, in that room).

Hoping that the 1.6’s were a close match to the 1.7's I bought a used pair this week. I got to set them up today. Wow are they ever sweet! I won’t tell you just how great they sound as you’ve literally heard it all before. Both the actual speakers as well as the neophyte “singing” their praises.

The purpose of this post is to ask about a crackling in the right speaker. It only does it at certain low frequencies and at moderately high volume levels. Although at JUST the right frequency The volume must be turned way down for it to go away. I can listen to dozens of songs without hearing it but when the right frequency is played it'll crackle and pop. Its definitely a mechanical type noise. It happens with low bass guitar notes and organ type notes.

From my reading, I expect it is either delamination or magnet slapping. I am not anywhere near the volume levels that I’ve read where the magnets slap, so I am really leaning towards delamination. I’ve also read that when the wires start to delaminate from the mylar at their ends there usually isn’t any audible evidence. It’s when they begin to separate in the middle of the panel that an audible vibration occurs. By the way, I wouldn’t refer to this as a vibration. It’s much lower in frequency. A crackling noise. It almost sounds like wood splitting.

What does this description sound like to you? What are my options to fix it? I've read PG's delam fix using different adhesive than the factory as well as others who use the factory chemicals. I'm not sure if I want to try the repair myself.

Magnepan rebuilds there speakers don’t they? Anybody have an Idea what they charge?

All opinions are appreciated!
