Return to Planar Speaker Asylum

Okay, because of the excellent suggestions some of you have passed along, I've decided to install new tweeters on my MG-1 IMP's. Thanks a ton, but let me ask a couple of questions about these. What's up with the binding posts? I thought they were made for bananas, but when I tried a couple pair that I have, they were so loose, one actually fell back out. Was that a common occurance on these, or are they just old & worn out? I wouldn't think they were worn out, as the previous owner only had them hooked up for a few years, and then with bare wire (I believe he said). Then again, am I wrong in assuming they were made for banana's? Possibly made for something I'm unaware of?
Next, although the fuses were good, there were two different kind. One had "BUSS AGC 1&1/2" on one end & "BUSS 250V" on the opposite end. The other fuse had "250V" followed by either "3/2 2A" or "312 2A" with nothing on the opposite end of the fuse. Should I replace both with new ones, and if so, what do I put back in?

Follow Ups:
MY MG-1s came new-2-me (that's used, in case you wondered) with 1 1/2 amp fuses.
This was about '79 or '80. The speakers when I got them were still pretty fresh. When I had a wacky / loud room mate, I swapped the fuses for 1 amp, just to 'be sure'. At that point I had a Carver M-400t of about 250x2 into 4 ohms and could easily pop the fuse.
Too much is never enough
Thanks for the reply. After posting the question about the fuses, I was checking the terminals, which as you know are on the whatchacallit "model # plate thingy" (I love it when I use technical terms, makes me feel smarter than I'm not). Anyway, there it was, in bigger writing than my recliner, "use 1.5 A type AG fuses"! Geez, I really don't need that kind of confirmation to make me feel stupid, but hey, there it was.

Here's the MG-IC manual with fuse specs, etc, included. I'm not sure if the 1.5 amp fuse speced here is correct for your speaker. If my memory serves the MG-I's I had were supposeed to use 2 amp fuses. Hope this helps a bit. You can always play it safe and use the 1.5 amp fuses.

First off, thanks for going to the trouble of linking your manual. Once I had finished reading it, I went into the other room to check my terminals to see if they had a set screw, like your manual describes for the 1C, but nope, just a plain old female type terminal which looks as if it was made for bananas. While looking at those though, DANG! Right there on the nameplate, it says "use 1.5 AG type fuses". Duh, how did I miss that, especially since I even took the fuses out? Oh well. As they used to tell us at work "Pay Attention To Detail!". How soon we forget. Thanks again!

Not MY manual, just a link to the Maggie Users Group home page. There's a ton on info if you click on the "MUG Home" link at the top of the page. Explore and learn!

Yeah, sorry, I knew that (about the manual). I hope you guys (planar people collectively), don't mind me bugging you with multiple questions in the future, with what will probably be "duh" type questions, at least to you all. I'm new to this type of venture (rewiring/rebuilding) at this level. I've refurnished or rebuilt "regular" box type speakers, but mainly it was just replacing old drivers w/new and refinishing the cabinets. I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed the more I think about what I'm getting into. I have no background in anything electrical and have only done (VERY) simple soldering. Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained I suppose. And these MG-1 IMP's were free, so I'm not out any money 'cept for the cost of the tweeter kit. Thanks again for your posts & info.

personally, I dont mind the questions at all...
If you get the chance though, the MUG home page is really a wealth of information. It does take a while tough to wade through it all!

That would be normal, bananas don't quite fit tight enough without snugging the set screw a bit. The fuses I'm not sure, I don't have that model. From what you describe it sounds like they are different amp values which is not good. Another member is sure to answer and know the correct fuse.
Thanks for your reply. MRR (above) was kind enough to link the manual for his 1C's so I could read it. If you see my response to him, you'll see what a dork I was for missing the print on the terminal plate that says "use 1.5 AG fuses". Also, my terminals have no set screws, just female holes for banana plugs. I guess they have been pushed & pulled around so much they are no longer tight. Once I get the plate off, maybe I can either tighten them up or replace them.

Please, when the plate is off, see if you can replace the banana with real spade or bare wire terminals.
Banana plugs? Hate 'em
My MG-1s Did Not have setscrews and my banana plug DID fit snugly.
Too much is never enough
Okey dokey, but why do you hate banana plugs so much? I've always thought they were really convenient, and perhaps because of the level of my equipment, I've never noticed any difference in sound.

maybe prejudice.
I may simply prefer a good binding post. I'm currently using a premium expanding banana at my speaker ends.......But, when I open 'er up to bridge out the fuse, I'll investigate new posts.
Also, for the jumpers......than I can use a plated copper strap between jumper posts.....
some have reported 'not being able to find a good banana' after listening tests.

X2 on the locking (expanding) banana posts on the cable ends. Here's a nice pair:

I'd also change the binding posts:
http://www.amazon.com/Dayton-BPFI-G-Fully-Insulated-Binding/dp/B000BJEZ1U
I've seen the Dayton stuff and have it 'on the list' of possibles.
I would like to find Rhodium plated copper, if it sticks.
A 'C' note + for bananas? NOT on the list!
is there a preferred spade lug? Solder on or Crimp?
Too much is never enough
