I think at least in one recent preamp (reviewed by Colloms in HiFi News) they use a similar topology (without switch!).
A buffer gets the signal from the pre output and feeds it via feedback network to the input.
The difference is that Altmanns circuit drives the feedback network from exactly the same buffer type as the amp output uses. The amp output though is running at completely different current levels, ie. it will distort different=more because it goes into class B when the needed current surpasses the idle current.
