I doubt that a cheap respirator will be effective against lead fumes. I'd want a proper respirator with a suitable filter - try an industrial safety products shop, and even that wouldn't be enough for me.In an industrial setting, you wouldn't melt lead without having an extraction fan operating to take most of the fumes away from people (all wearing respirators even with the fans). Of course that raises equal safety problems about how you dispose of the fumes.
If you melt any significant quantity of lead at home, remember the fumes will spread, and you may well be exposing your family as well as yourself - and when it comes to that sort of situation I don't think buying more respirators is a good approach.
Much better to take TAFKA Steve's approach and have someone who should know how to do it actually do it properly, and safely for you and others.
PS - I work in occupational health and safety. That's why I'm being anal about this approach.
