Lead Shot from Diving Shop

155.69.4.53

As guns are banned in my locality, I was able to obtain diving weight packs which are lead shot packed in vinyl . These are available from shops selling diving gear.

I cut open the vinyl packs and poured the lead shot in DIY MDF boxes which were then sprayed with "granite-look" paint (ala Bright Star). These are placed on top of CD players, amps or speakers for a tighter, less cloudy soundstage, as well as more musical articulation and expressiveness. The lead shot could even be mixed with sand for more dampening.

For audio, I think lead shot works much better than solid lead bars. Apart from providing mass loading, the mini lead balls, packed together, will dissipate resonance and vibration from the equipment & the environment through friction. Solid lead bars don't seem to do this, but can only mass-load your vibrations down to a more absorbent medium, like the sand in your rack or speaker stand.

Also, select the material used to couple the lead shot to your equipment with care, as anything coming into contact with your speakers, amp or CDP will contribute its resonant signature. I use DH cones (pointing upwards) to couple lead-filled MDF boxes to my CDP. Try blu-tack as a cheaper alternative.

Would appreciate any feedback on this.
