Re: Group Purhase Ethics & Barry Diament's Hip Joints

I've been on the edge of this issue for a long time. Honestly, I don't know all the history or the technical details. My father-in-law just got new knee joints. From what he claims, it's a lot more painful than these hip joints, though my ex-father-in-law might claim otherwise. He got both!

But I do have some opinions and these are mine and not a reflection of Audio Asylum policy as deemed defensible by council. (Bruce, you’re covering my back, right?)

First, DIY product hype that crosses over into a commercial venture might not be strictly against the rules, but it does violate the spirit. Secondly, if the product is patented, it’s illegal to do it. I suspect that would put the Asylum in the position of cooperating with any action against those folks. It’d also chew up a ton of attorney time and money.

So the bottom line is that I hate to get in to middle. Sure, lots of tweaks seem way too expensive for the materials involved. But copying designs that might be patented does seem unethical to me.
